Harry S. Truman State Park and Reservoir
I must have inherited my love of fishing from Daddy. I just can't imagine mother ever touching a worm. The family discovered Truman Reservoir when my brother Donnie married Susan Hines and she introduced us to the wonders of the lake. I'm sketchy about all this, but I believe her dad worked on building the lake and she sort of grew up going there. So now - it's a Moxley tradition. My first trip was in the spring to snag for spoonbill. After that every July I would fly out from New York, rent a car and drive to the lake and meet the family there. I rented cabins at the Reel & Trigger Resort, Parkside Cabins and later R & C Adventures closer to where Donnie has his camp. The last year Mom went,2008, we all went. Sister Duane and her family came from Maryland, my daughter Tammy and her husband came from New York, and of course sister Suzanne and her family from St. Joseph. I think we rented all the cabins in the resort. There was a lot of laughter filling the air that year. Little did we know that would be the last year we all would go.
Best story: So we had spent the day on the lake fishing, and then returned to camp for the evening. Everyone was sitting on the porch relaxing, drinking some beer, and talking about the day. My nephew, Michael Thomas (Suzanne's oldest) who we all call MC was with us and was talking about how great a fisherman Uncle Donnie is. He also mentioned how great his dad, also a Michael Thomas, was at taking the fish off the hook. Our friend, Gary Young had also joined the crew, and MC indicated Gary was very good at putting the worm on the hook. To show respect MC awarded Uncle Donnie status as the Master Fisherman, and his father Master Netter. So Gary got the label - wait for it.... Master Baiter! I think Mother almost had a stroke!
